How to Survive Marketing Mishaps

It is a virtual certainty that at some point in your marketing career you will come up with what appears to be a GREAT idea…only to have that great idea blow up in your face.

That’s what happened to me last winter…and I happened to capture this mishap on camera! ; )

Here’s the background:

I was determined to “spice up” my blog and my latest videos by teaching a lesson while doing one of my favorite hobbies- snow skiing.

I’ve been skiing since I was 8 years-old, so I’m no stranger to the slopes.  So I decided to take my trusty Flip Camera and head down a few runs while filming a quick lesson.

I did a practice run, and all went well.  Then my little brother issued a challenge….

Now, just so you know, I rarely EVER turn down a challenge, so of course I had to take it (plus, my little brother and I love that sibling rivalry)

Somewhere along the way, I decided that this challenge would be the PERFECT backdrop for a video on “facing your fears”.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan… check it out:

Now, I could’ve just scrapped the idea because it didn’t work as planned.  But I didn’t.

Instead I decided to turn it into a little video poking fun at myself for my silly (and dangerous) mistake.

Look, as you journey down the path of marketing your business online, mistakes are BOUND to happen.  Just plan on it.  Things will never be perfect, so rip the Band-Aid off and just go!  And when things don’t go according to plan, look for an alternate lesson:

- What lesson can be learned from the mishap?

- What humor can be found in the mistake? Sometimes people just need a good laugh!

- Can you help others avoid making that mistake? If so, ‘fess up to your mistake and help others avoid making the same mistake you did.  They’ll be ever so grateful!

- Does this showcase a different side of you that you might not have shared with your readers before?

Did you enjoy this article and video?  Think it can benefit another person (or just make them laugh a lot)?  Then please share your thoughts and this article!

After watching the video, I learned that you should not do something if you are not sure about it. In relation to business, don’t do any marketing strategy if you are not sure if it is the right marketing strategy to use.

Well, definitely have never wiped out let alone have gone skiing, but I tell you- Growing up I learned on thing when sledding. Never be the last person in the back to get on a cheap sled built for 3 or 4 people. It was a cold dip in a creek because everyone bailed out and I did not see what the fuss was in time. Real America’s home video kind of stuff. Of course, I was mad, but later I laughed and still do when the story comes up at get togethers.

Kind of reminds me the the Animaniacs skit with the skull guy who does “Good Idea, Bad Idea”.

As long as a person is open minded, they can learn from their mistakes.

    Natasha,

That’s great, it shows us all #1 not to take things too seriously, and #2 that marketing should be fun. If we keep things fun and light, we can certainly avoid a lot of stress… that is, unless you are falling down a ski slope…

    :-)

Great point on what you are getting at here.

    Best Regards,
    James

    Hey Natasha,

Nice video! You certainly know how to make them sing. We all make mistakes, and sometimes they are big ones. I ahve spent months on projects that didn’t work out.

What makes the difference is the point you make. Pcik yourself up, dust off the experience and see what you can learn from it.

Then get back on your skis and go again. I see it all as a lot of fun – and a challenge and like you, I can’t resist that. You are very wise!

Well I love trying new and different things so I probably would have taken the challenge as well. Very few things in life are ‘sure’ … all we can do is our best and learn along the way. I’m glad you didn’t scrap it, thanks for sharing!

Natasha, Thanks for sharing your Real life with us. I’ve never been on a pair of skis, so I know I would not take the challenge. I am one of those who don’t get inspired by competition. I just let the others bat it out. It’s too stressful and I try to keep peace on all accounts. As far as marketing mishaps……they are bound to happen, but like you said just learn from them and laugh and move on.
    Have a great week,
    Lynn
